Many people who access counselling have been referred by their GP, or their GP has suggested they might try counselling.
Of those clients who then go on to access counselling the word depression has been used by their GP.
A large number of my clients are fearful of the term depression, and imagine that this is something that they can never recover from. They often have no understanding of how they have become depressed.
I explain to clients that we cope with everyday life with all its ups and downs, but when the balance becomes uneven so that suddenly there are more downs we find coping more difficult.Talking therapy (or counselling) can help to redress the balance of our lives enabling us to cope once more.
Depression is not a life sentence.
